Hollywood Crop Pre-Crop Week 2 Distributions and Activities

Second stop: The Griffith Observatory

We continue our journey as we visit some real stars by making a stop at the Griffith Observatory..

Here are some fun facts about the Griffith Observatory:

  • Griffith Observatory is one of the only major facilities in the world that still produces exclusively live planetarium shows. Over 100,000 shows have been presented since the building opened in 1935.
  • Over eight million people have looked through the Observatory’s 12-inch Zeiss telescope, more than through any other telescope on Earth.
  • The Griffith Observatory is a premier filming location having appeared in hundreds of film and television productions, most notably Rebel Without a Cause starring James Dean in 1955.
  • World War II aviators and Apollo astronauts trained in Griffith Observatory’s planetarium theater to learn how to navigate by the stars.
  • The Observatory is located on the southern slope of Mount Hollywood in Griffith Park, just above the Los Feliz neighborhood. It is 1,134 feet above sea level and is visible from many parts of the Los Angeles basin.
  • The Observatory is the best vantage point for observing the world-famous Hollywood Sign.
  • Since opening in 1935, the Observatory has welcomed over 85 million visitors.
  • Griffith Observatory is a unique hybrid of public observatory, planetarium, and exhibition space. It was constructed with funds from the bequest of Griffith J. Griffith (who donated the land for Griffith Park in 1896), who specified the purpose, features, and location of the building in his 1919 Will.
  • Upon completion of construction in 1935, the Observatory was given to the City of Los Angeles with the provision that it be operated for the public with no admission charge.
  • When it opened in 1935, it was one of the first institutions in the U.S. dedicated to public science and possessed the third planetarium in the U.S.

How cool is that?

Hollywood Spreadsheet

For those of you who are spreadsheet lovers, we have created a spreadsheet that will keep track of all the different things we will be offering throughout this crop. This spreadsheet is being delivered via Google Docs and can be downloaded and used in Excel.

IF YOU ARE NOT FAMILIAR WITH EXCEL, WE RECOMMEND YOU SKIP THIS SECTION AND WAIT UNTIL WE GET CLOSER TO THE CROP BEFORE DOWNLOADING THIS SPREADSHEET FOR USE. We do not provide Excel training, though you will be able to find lots of Excel training on Youtube. We will review the basics during our weekly webinar.

The spreadsheet will allow you to:

  • have a running list of all things offered during the crop

  • have a running list of all hashtags used during the crop

  • sort items received by type

  • have a direct link to the things distributed during the crop

  • keep track of offerings you used during the crop

  • keep track of badges earned during the crop

  • keep track of pages completed during the crop

    and more!

You will be able to fully customize your spreadsheet in a way that works for you.

We highly recommend that when editing your spreadsheet, any desired additional information (columns, rows or cells) be added to the end of the spreadsheet. This will make it easy to copy and paste details that get added to the spreadsheet during subsequent weeks from the master spreadsheet to your personalized spreadsheet. You can add any columns that are meaningful to you (i.e. Badge Earned, Page Created, etc.).

CLICK HERE to access the Google Spreadsheet. Go to File> Download> Microsoft Excel (.xlsx) to download a copy. You must have Microsoft Excel in order to open this file. Alternatively, you can copy the document to your own Google Drive account.
