Fourth stop: Hollywood Walk of Fame

HWC W4 WALK OF FAME.jpg

Here are some fun facts about Hollywood Walk of Fame:

  • The original idea for the Walk of Fame came from the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce’s volunteer president E. M. Stuart in 1953 as a marketing strategy, a full seven years before construction began. He proposed the Walk as a means to “maintain the glory of a community whose name means glamour and excitement in the four corners of the world.”
  • The Hollywood Walk of Fame is a historic landmark which consists of more than 2,700 five-pointed terrazzo and brass stars embedded in the sidewalks along 15 blocks of Hollywood Boulevard and three blocks of Vine Street in Hollywood, California.
  • An average of two stars are added to the Walk on a monthly basis.
  • Each star costs approximately $50,000.
  • If a Star is defaced or damaged, it has to be fixed or replaced. Since it's a public sidewalk, the city of Los Angeles is usually tasked with maintaining the Walk of Fame with the help of funds raised by Hollywood Chamber of Commerce.
  • The first star to be dedicated on the historic walkway belonged to the actress Joanne Woodward, an Academy Award winner for The Three Faces of Eve (1957).
  • As far as acting dynasties go, the Barrymores will be tough to beat. There are six stars among the family, including one each for John, Ethel, John Drew, and Drew and two for Lionel.
  • As part of the Walk of Fame’s 50th anniversary celebration in 2010, the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce buried a time capsule in the same place the Walk originated, at the corner of Hollywood and Highland.
  • Typos can happen, even on the Walk of Fame: There have been a couple of typos in the Walk of Fame's more than 50 years. In 2010, Julia Louis-Dreyfus showed up to smile over a star dedicated to “Julia Luis Dreyfus.” The Veep star, unsurprisingly, was rather amused by the mix-up, telling reporters, “The misspelling was so perfectly apt, a great metaphor for show business. Right when you think you've made it, you get knocked down. It's an ideal metaphor for how this business works.” The star was quickly replaced and the typo version was sent to Louis-Dreyfus as a souvenir.
  • Some typos are prophetic. Confusion arose when actor Don Haggerty was awarded a star in 1960 that was engraved as Dan Haggerty. Though it was eventually replaced with a corrected version, in 1994 Grizzly Adams actor Dan Haggerty received his own star.

Before you know it, the Pixies will have their own star on the Walk of Fame.

This week we have updated the week 4 tab. If you downloaded the spreadsheet last week, you can copy the items from the week 4 tab and paste to the week 4 tab and the full event tab on your copy of the spreadsheet to make it up to date. If you are downloading the spreadsheet for the first time, it will be completely up to date.

Additional Tabs Added:

We have added an additional tab to the spreadsheet to help you as you start gathering photos to crop with and to give you an idea what type of content is needed for the breakouts. Not all Breakout sessions will be on this tab of the spreadsheet. We will only list Breakouts that require a specific type of photo or content.

CLICK HERE to access the Google Spreadsheet. Go to File> Download> Microsoft Excel (.xlsx) to download a copy. You must have Microsoft Excel in order to open this file. Alternatively, you can copy the document to your own Google Drive account.
